Cairns Aquatic Building - 08 The Forgotten |

Under construction....
THE FORGOTTEN NORTH
Having lived in the North for the pat 50 years, it surprises me not that anything North of the Tropic of Capricorn is never taken into account on the National Scale. This is despite the fact that we contribute far more than our share of wealth to the Commonwealth. But takers have rarely ever been givers. To bring some light on this subect with regards our fight to save Heritage, I present a letter produced by one of our members. Mr. Ray Taylor ME Retired. To the retiring Dr.Robert Bruce, Heritage Division, Department of Environment & Heritage, Canberra ACT.
Re: Nomination
for
National Heritage Listing Cairns Wharf Precinct
Far North Queensland
Introductory Note. As
you are aware, in January 2006 a Nomination for National Heritage Listing was
made for The Cairns Wharf Precinct.
The reason for this application was borne out of the completely
unacceptable manner in which the old 86 year old Cairns Aquatic Club, currently
known as the Cairns Yacht Club, failed, in
December 2003, to gain State Heritage Listing.
In the interim, a further nomination was made on the
24th of September, 2004, to the Australian National Council to have
the Club House Heritage Listed on a National basis. This also failed on the
grounds that it lacked sufficient National Significance.
It was later found that an important document had been
omitted from the submission.
The document in question was subsequently forwarded to
The Australian Heritage Council
and now forms part of the current Nomination for the Cairns Wharf Precinct.
National Significance. The measurement of this quantity and its
application to the assessment process is of concern to those of us, here in the
North, involved in the application of this Nomination.
For example, the map showing the current forty one
(41) heritage listed sites
indicates that none exist north of the tropic of Capricorn.
Disclaimer:: The Cairns Tropic Jazz Club
has a historically vested interest in seeing the Aquatic preserved. The CTJC plays
there every Thursday Night and have done so for 230 weeks. Musician
Members of the Jazz Club have played the Aquatic as far back as 1938
(69 years). Furthermore the Aquatic Club will be 100 years old on 30th
March 2008. Timbers in the building date back to 1895. The Cairns
Tropic Jazz Club committee has granted me permission to tell the story
of the Aquatic Building through these pages. The views and facts
displayed in these pages are not necessarily those of the Cairns
Tropiuc Jazz Club Inc. Signed Rob Williams President Cairns Tropic Jazz Club Inc Chairman Cairns Heritage Group
